Can you collect rocks in Utah State Parks?
Almost never. Utah State Parks treat rocks, plants, and other natural features as park resources. Removing them without written authorization is not the same hobby collecting you get on many BLM tracts.
That surprises people coming from Topaz Mountain or Dugway, then stopping at a state park on the drive home.
How the land types differ
- BLM: Casual collecting often allowed inside weight limits.
- Utah State Parks: Collecting generally prohibited without written permission.
- National Parks (Zion, Bryce, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef): Collecting prohibited.
- SITLA: Trust land. Expect a permit or stay off.
What to do instead
Photograph it. Note the GPS. Collect on a confirmed BLM parcel the same day if the material type exists there. If a park staffs a gift shop or partners with a rock club, buy the specimen — don’t pocket the outcrop.
